Have you had your sights set on studying in the UK for a while now? Then no doubt you’ve already realized one key thing – 2026 is not the same as 2023. The rules have shifted, the costs have gone up, and the post-study work window has changed. Yet thousands of Indian students are still making it work, and getting their visas approved with the right preparation.

At Unitrack Overseas, we have been guiding students from Chandigarh, Ambala, and across Punjab and Haryana to study abroad since 2008. This guide is built on what we are seeing on the ground right now – real applications, real updates, and the exact things that are causing approvals as well as rejections in 2026.

Whether you are targeting the September 2026 intake or planning ahead for January 2027, read this before you apply.

What Is the UK Student Visa? (And Who Needs It)

The UK Student Visa – officially known as the Student Visa route, which replaced the old Tier 4 General category – is the visa you need if you are 16 or above and plan to study a degree-level course at a UKVI-licensed UK university.

Most Indian students applying for a bachelor’s, master’s, MBA, or PhD programme fall under this category. Child Student Visas and Short-term Study Visas exist for different situations, but for most people reading this, the Student Visa is the one that applies.

Here is what the current picture looks like at a glance:

Detail2026 Figure
Visa Application Fee£558 (approx. ₹72,000) from April 8, 2026
Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)£776 per year of study
Standard Processing Time (from India)~3 weeks from biometrics date
Work Rights20 hours/week during term; full-time in vacations
Post-Study Work (Graduate Route)2 years currently; 18 months from Jan 2027 for most

Maintenance Funds – Outside London£1,171/month (up to 9 months = £10,539)

What Has Actually Changed in 2026 - The Big Updates You Cannot Miss

This is the section most guides skip over quickly. Do not do that. These changes affect your application, your budget, and your career plan after graduation.

1. The UK Has Gone 100% Digital – No More BRP Cards

The UK has now fully moved to a digital eVisa system. Physical Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) cards are no longer issued. Your visa exists entirely through your UKVI online account, and you access it digitally.

What this means practically: you must keep your login credentials safe, your email address active, and your account updated throughout your stay. Losing access to your UKVI account while in the UK creates serious complications. Set it up properly from day one.

2. Maintenance Funds Have Gone Up (Effective January 2026)

From January 2026, the monthly living cost requirement has increased:

  • London: £1,529/month – up from £1,334 previously
  • Outside London: £1,171/month – up from £1,023 previously

These funds must sit in your bank account for 28 consecutive days before you submit your application. This is not the date you apply – it is 28 days before that. Plan accordingly.

If you are using an education loan from SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI, Axis Bank, or Bank of Baroda, a formal sanction letter from the bank is accepted in place of personal bank statements. The letter must confirm the loan is approved, not just applied for – that distinction matters.

3. The Graduate Route Is Being Cut to 18 Months

This is the one that surprises most students when they find out mid-way through their planning.

Currently, graduates can stay and work in the UK for 2 years after completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree (3 years for PhD). From January 1, 2027, that window for bachelor’s and master’s graduates drops to 18 months.

Here is where it gets important: if you are starting a one-year master’s programme in September 2026, you will graduate around September 2027. When you apply for the Graduate Route, it will be after January 2027 – and you will get 18 months, not 2 years.

That is six months fewer to find a job, get sponsored for a Skilled Worker Visa, and build your career. It is not a dealbreaker, but it changes how you approach job hunting from the moment you land.

4. English Standards Are Stricter

The Home Office has maintained CEFR B2 on all four tests: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Scores at the lower edge of the mark used to be passed without a second look.

Accepted tests include IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, and TOEFL iBT. If your score is sitting right at the minimum, retake the test before applying. A rejected application due to English scores wastes time, money, and your CAS validity window.

5. Universities Are Under Pressure Too – What That Means for You

New BCA standards require that universities have at least a 95 per cent visa pass rate – anything less means sanctions up to including having their license to sponsor international students revoked. As such, there are now a number of universities that are more careful of the profiles that they can consider coming in from particular markets. What this entails for you is that your SOP (Statement of Purpose), academic profile, as well as financial documents need to truly match up.

UK Student Visa Eligibility Requirements 2026

Before gathering documents, confirm you meet the eligibility criteria. The Home Office uses a points-based assessment – you need to satisfy all of the following to qualify:

Missing even one of these is enough for refusal. This is not bureaucratic caution – it is the actual experience we see when applications come back rejected.

UK Student Visa Documents Checklist 2026

Get this list right. Incomplete or inconsistent documents are the single biggest cause of delays and refusals for Indian students. Every document needs to tell the same story about who you are, why you are going, and how you will fund yourself.

DocumentWhat to Check
Valid Indian PassportMinimum 6 months validity beyond course end date
CAS Reference NumberIssued by your UKVI-licensed university after unconditional offer acceptance
Academic Transcripts & CertificatesAll qualifications from 10th standard onwards
English Proficiency Test ScoreIELTS, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT result sheet
Bank Statements (28-day)Must show required maintenance funds consistently – no sudden large deposits
Education Loan Sanction LetterFrom SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI, Axis Bank, or Bank of Baroda; must state approved Bank
TB Test CertificateFrom a UKVI-approved clinic only – non-approved clinics are an automatic rejection
Statement of Purpose (SOP)Must logically connect your past studies, current course choice, and future career goals
Proof of AccommodationUniversity hall confirmation or rental agreement
Passport-Sized PhotographsAs per UKVI specifications
ATAS CertificateOnly if required for your nationality and course subject

One thing we tell every student at Unitrack Overseas: your SOP and your financial documents should not contradict each other or your academic history. A student applying for a master’s in finance whose SOP references an unrelated career goal – or whose bank statements show irregular transactions – creates immediate doubt. Visa officers are trained to spot inconsistencies.

UK Student Visa Application Process Step by Step

Here is exactly how it works from receiving the offer letter until you land up in the UK:

1
Step 1: Get Your Unconditional Offer

Submit an application at a UK university which appears on the UKVI Register of Licensed Sponsors.
Successfully complete the conditions on the academic and language front until you get an unconditional offer letter.

2
Step 2: Obtain your CAS

Once you accept the unconditional offer, the UK university will issue you a CAS reference number.
This CAS is your only gateway to your student visa.

3
Step 3: Take Your TB Test

Go to a TB test-approved clinic from the UKVI in India and take a test.
You should expect the results within a few days.
Do not go to any other private clinic; this will lead to an automatic refusal.

4
Step 4: Arrange Funds

You need to arrange for bank statements that prove you have the required maintenance funds in the account for a period of 28 consecutive days.
In case your education is funded through a bank loan, you should get a formal sanction letter from the bank.

5
Step 5: Write a SOP

Write an SOP that states your personal details, your study background, reason for choosing that specific program and university and your future career goals.
A poorly written SOP can lead to the rejection of your visa in 2026.
You can get assistance with SOP Writing from our experts at Unitrack Overseas under our visa services.

6
Step 6: Submit Your Online Application

Fill your visa application online from the UK Government’s official website (gov.uk/student-visa).

7
Step 7: Pay the Visa Fee and IHS

Pay your UK visa application fees (558) and Immigration Health Surcharge at the time of filling out the application.

8
Step 8: Book and attend your Biometrics appointment

Book and attend your biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India and submit all supporting documents.

9
Step 9: Track Your Application

Check your application status via your UKVI Online Account.

10
Step 10: Receive Your Decision

Standard processing takes approximately 3 weeks from your biometrics date. Priority service brings this down to 5 working days.

11
Step 11: Download your Visa

Your visa now exists electronically. Log in to the UKVI online account where you can view your eVisa. Remember the credentials you logged in with!

Note for Sept 2026 applications – Application deadline – apply before mid July 2026; June, July & August is the peak application period, and the UKVI standard processing time will be much more than 3 weeks.

UK Student Visa Processing Time 2026

Service TypeProcessing Time
Standard (from India)~3 weeks from biometrics date
Priority Service5 working days
Super PriorityNext working day

The clock starts from your biometrics appointment, not from when you submit the online form. Factor this into your timeline – especially if your course starts in September and your university has an enrollment deadline.

Top UK Student Visa Rejection Reasons (and What to Do)

Although India has a fairly high UK student visa acceptance rate (compared to many other countries), there are reasons why applicants get rejected.

Looking at what we have experience with at Unitrack Overseas, these are some of the top reasons for rejection:

TB Test Not at an Approved Clinic

This is probably the simplest mistake to avoid. Always go to a UKVI Approved clinic to get your test. Find the official Home Office List of Approved Clinics here to avoid a rejection.

Expired or WRONG CAS Number / Details

Ensure the details on your CAS match your application. Make sure that the validity of your CAS hasn’t expired during the course of the application.

Unexplained Deposits / Irregular Bank Statements

Large unexplained sums of cash deposited within 28 days of your application are red flags. The funds should be established within the bank account and show organic activity for at least 28 days.

Generic or Mismatched SOP

If your SOP could apply to almost anyone, it’s not effective. Visa officers want to see a clear link between your background, why you want to study that course and your career prospects. A science student applying for a social sciences course with no adequate explanation will make them skeptical.

Marginal IELTS Scores

As of 2026, with new, increased IELTS standards, it’s now even more critical to get decent grades on your English test. Having borderline results might not be sufficient any longer. If you’re in this position, retake it if possible.

Applying with outdated assumptions

Students who assume they can bring dependants, that the Graduate Route is still 2 years, or that certain financial workarounds still apply are in for a rude surprise. Rules have changed significantly since 2022–2023. Work with an updated, experienced consultant.

Our IELTS and PTE coaching and SOP review services exist specifically to address these failure points before you submit.

The Graduate Route in 2026 - What Every September Intake Student Must Know

For years, the UK Graduate Route (also called the Post-Study Work visa) was a major draw for Indian students. Two years of open work rights after a bachelor’s or master’s – no job offer required, no employer sponsorship needed immediately – gave graduates breathing room to job-hunt properly.

That breathing room is shrinking.

From January 1, 2027, the Graduate Route drops to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates. PhD and research degree graduates still get 3 years.

If you start a one-year master’s in September 2026, your timeline looks like this:

Eighteen months is workable – but only if you are strategic from day one. Here is what that looks like in practice:

The UK remains one of the best places to build an international career. Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, Manchester, Edinburgh – these degrees carry real weight globally. The landscape is more demanding than it was three years ago, but it is absolutely navigable with the right plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

The UK student visa fee is £558 (approximately ₹75,000) from April 8, 2026. This applies whether you apply from India or switch/extend from within the UK. You also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £776 per year of study separately.
You must provide proof of £1,529 a month for 9 months if you plan to study in London (amount: £13,761), and of £1,171 a month for students studying in the UK outside London (amount: £10,539). These funds must be in your bank account for a period of 28 consecutive days prior to submitting your application. Proof of payment of your first year tuition fees must also be provided.
Yes. A TB test certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic is mandatory for all Indian students applying for a UK student visa. Having a test done at a non-approved clinic is one of the most common – and completely avoidable – reasons for refusal.
Standard processing takes approximately 3 weeks from the date of your biometrics appointment. Priority processing reduces this to 5 working days, and Super Priority to the next working day. Apply early during peak season (June–August) as processing times often stretch.
Yes. You can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official university vacation periods. Short-term study visas and Child Student Visas do not include work rights.
It depends on when you apply for it. Students who complete their degree and apply for the Graduate Route before January 1, 2027 will receive the current 2-year duration. Students who apply for it on or after January 1, 2027 – including most students starting a one-year master’s in September 2026 – will receive 18 months.
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is a unique reference number your UKVI-licensed university issues once you accept an unconditional offer. It confirms your course, start date, fees, and other details. Your visa application cannot proceed without it.
Yes. A formal loan sanction letter from a recognised Indian bank – SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI, Axis Bank, or Bank of Baroda – is accepted as financial evidence. The letter must be on official bank letterhead and clearly state that the loan has been approved, not just applied for.
It is the official UK government list of universities and colleges that are approved to sponsor international students. Your chosen university must be on this list before you apply. Always verify this before paying any university application fee.
Absolutely. The UK offers shorter course durations and strong global recognition, but Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have different post-study work rules and immigration pathways. Our team at Unitrack Overseas can walk you through a genuine side-by-side comparison based on your profile and goals – explore other study destinations here.

The Bottom Line

2026 is genuinely more demanding for UK student visa applicants than it was a few years ago. Higher maintenance funds, a fully digital visa system, stricter English requirements, and a shrinking post-study work window mean that walking into this underprepared is a real risk.

But here is what has not changed: a well-prepared Indian student with the right university offer, clean documentation, and a solid SOP still has very strong approval odds. The UK’s grant rate for Indian applicants remains among the highest of any major English-speaking destination.

The difference between students who sail through the process and those who face delays or refusals almost always comes down to preparation – not luck.

If you want that preparation to be thorough and grounded in current, real-world experience, talk to the team at Unitrack Overseas. We have been doing this since 2008, and we are not going anywhere.
